Our new “Phrase of the Week” is Frog Soup

Frog Soup, which frog will you be?

By: Dr. Jim Bodoh, Chiropractor at River City Chiropractic

This phrase relates to the idea of accommodation.  Accommodation, or adaptation, is what helps most people get through tough times in their lives. It can be an accommodation of stress, pain, or anything else going on within your body. As I said above, this can be a good thing that helps us get through tough times, but it can also be a negative thing when we put our problems off for too long and they become serious.

The idea of frog soup is that if you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out right away; if you put a frog in warm water and slowly turn up the

heat, the frog will stay in the water even when the water is boiling around it.

We do the same thing with our bodies. If we have something serious happen, like a broken arm, we will run right in to the hospital just like the first frog that is put in boiling water. However, when we have little aches and pains, or stresses in our body, we try to shake them off and put them in the back of our mind. The longer we ignore these “little problems”, the worse they get. Then, sooner or later, we are in “boiling water,” and up to our neck with serious problems that could have been taken care of when they were “little aches and pains.”

In our clinic, we like to teach our patients about the idea of preventative care. This is when you come in every so often for a check-up to maintain a healthy balance, and not allow the “little aches and pains” to become catastrophic.  This is the same philosophy that dentists use when they have you come in for cleanings and checkups every 6 months. They are trying to make sure that your little cavities do not turn into something that ruins your entire tooth, and forces you to have painful surgeries at increased costs. This is the same concept that your eye doctor and your physician want you to do also.

So when you hear the phrase “Frog Soup,” you can think about the two frogs and remember to not put your little problems off until it is too late.
