With the seasons changing and it getting colder outside, we have seen an increased incidences of people getting sick with cold and flu symptoms. Some of this plays into the changing of the season, but most of this plays in to how well you take care of yourself. Did you ever wonder why some people seem to be sick all the time in the winter and other people seem to be healthy the whole time? For many of these “healthy” people, it doesn’t even matter that they are surrounded by sick people; they still seem to never get sick. These “healthy” people are taking better care of themselves with different choices to boost their immune system. We are going to share with you the secrets of staying healthy throughout the winter season.

There are three main categories that we will talk about to help boost your immune system: Lifestyle Changes, Vitamins, and Chiropractic Care.

Lifestyle changes to help you avoid getting sick can be some of the most effective ways to keep you healthy.

    • Sleep- your body’s immune system needs you to sleep to function at its maximum capacity. Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Are you sick of being Sick?

    • Avoid Sugar- bacteria feed on sugar, avoiding added sugar can help starve the bacteria and make them easier for your immune system to get rid of.
    • Increase protein- protein drives the immune system. There are countless amino acids that come from protein that are rate limiting steps in your immune system reactions.
    • Eat immune boosting foods- these foods include: Fruits, Vegetables, Garlic, Onion, and Ginger.

Vitamins help supplement your diet so that your body can function at maximum capacity to fight off colds. Try adding these vitamins during the cold season.

    • Zinc- 100 different steps in the immune system need Zinc around to happen.
    • Vitamin C- an Anti-Oxidant which protects healthy cells and promotes your immune system.
    • Vitamin A- blocks infections from getting in the body.
    • Vitamin E- an Anti-Oxidant that promotes the immune system.
    • Echinacea- an Anti-microbial that kills bacteria and boosts immune-cell activity.
    • Bee Propolis- an Anti-microbial that also fights off viruses.

Chiropractic care can help your immune system also!

    • Getting adjusted regularly improves immune system functions to help you fight off colds.
    • Your chiropractic care can also help you get over a cold quicker by activating the nerves that control your immune system.
    • You will feel better faster after getting adjusted when you have a cold.

Follow these easy steps to help yourself have the healthiest year of your life.

  2. The Benefits of Kinesio Tape

How many people watched the Olympics in China in 2008? Well if you did, you might have seen the very colorful tape being worn by several athletes. Most people noticed it on the beach volleyball players because they had the most skin exposed. That colorful tape is called Kinesio tape. Kinesio tape has been around since the mid 1970′s, but has only become popular to the public in the last 10 years. This tape has many benefits including:

    • Re-educate the neuromuscular system
    • Reduce pain
    • Optimize performance
    • Prevent injury
    • Promote improved circulation and healing

Look what Kinesio tape can do for a bruise!

At River City Chiropractic, Kinesio tape is used to help patients in several of these ways. Patients here have already seen the benefits of using Kinesio tape to help them with sprained ankles, sore back muscles, sore arms from pitching, and even to help heal bad bruises. The picture at the right shows the effects of using Kinesio tape on a bruise. The tape was cut into several different “fingers” and laid across the bruise at different spots so that you could see the difference between the areas that were under the tape and the areas that were not. The dark blueish/black areas were not under the tape and the yellow areas were. This was a pretty bad bruise, but it healed up in a very quick time period because of the tape. In this case, the tape allowed the increased blood flow and lymphatic drainage to help heal the damaged tissue caused from the bruise. This is just one example from our clinic on how Kinesio tape has helped to reduce healing times.

As Kinesio tape becomes ever more popular,  more and more research is being done to help explain the incredible results. Stop in or call today to find out if and how Kinesio tape along with chiropractic care can help you heal faster and get you back to doing the things you love.

  3. Our new “Phrase of the Week” is the Golden Gate Bridge

    by
    Comment

Our new phrase of the week!

By: Dr. Jim Bodoh, Chiropractor at River City Chiropractic

This is a great phrase as it relates to your health and chiropractic care.  The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic bridge in the United States. It was the longest suspension bridge from end to end at the time it was built (http://goldengatebridge.org/research/). There is a rumor that the bridge is painted end to end annually, and that the bridge is so big that it takes all year to complete. Although this is false and the bridge is only touched up every year, the Golden Gate Bridge does require a constant maintenance team to help keep it in tip-top shape.

    The Golden Gate Bridge

This is just like your body because you need constant maintenance care to stay in top shape. Think about all the times that you sleep wrong, have an accident or fall, or just tweak something. All of those little things add up, and if they are not taken care of they can lead to bigger problems. I can already hear the people screaming, “I knew it, once you go to the chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life!” To this I simply respond, what other doctor do you know of that you go to once and they say that you are good to go and never have to come back in again? If you go into your eye doctor for a checkup and everything checks out fine, do they say, you know you should be good for the rest of your life because your eyes look great now. No, they want to follow up in a while to make sure nothing changes from year to year. This is the same with chiropractors; we want to check up on you to make sure that the little problems don’t become bigger ones. Just like on the Golden Gate Bridge, they see the benefit of doing a little maintenance here and there so that they don’t have to replace the whole bridge.

  4. Our new “Phrase of the Week” is Frog Soup

    by
    2

Frog Soup, which frog will you be?

By: Dr. Jim Bodoh, Chiropractor at River City Chiropractic

This phrase relates to the idea of accommodation.  Accommodation, or adaptation, is what helps most people get through tough times in their lives. It can be an accommodation of stress, pain, or anything else going on within your body. As I said above, this can be a good thing that helps us get through tough times, but it can also be a negative thing when we put our problems off for too long and they become serious.

The idea of frog soup is that if you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out right away; if you put a frog in warm water and slowly turn up the

    Frog Soup

heat, the frog will stay in the water even when the water is boiling around it.

We do the same thing with our bodies. If we have something serious happen, like a broken arm, we will run right in to the hospital just like the first frog that is put in boiling water. However, when we have little aches and pains, or stresses in our body, we try to shake them off and put them in the back of our mind. The longer we ignore these “little problems”, the worse they get. Then, sooner or later, we are in “boiling water,” and up to our neck with serious problems that could have been taken care of when they were “little aches and pains.”

In our clinic, we like to teach our patients about the idea of preventative care. This is when you come in every so often for a check-up to maintain a healthy balance, and not allow the “little aches and pains” to become catastrophic.  This is the same philosophy that dentists use when they have you come in for cleanings and checkups every 6 months. They are trying to make sure that your little cavities do not turn into something that ruins your entire tooth, and forces you to have painful surgeries at increased costs. This is the same concept that your eye doctor and your physician want you to do also.

So when you hear the phrase “Frog Soup,” you can think about the two frogs and remember to not put your little problems off until it is too late.

  5. Interesting Article About Chiropractic and Neck Pain

    by
    Comment

Chiropractic Care and Neck Pain Go Hand in Hand.

By: Dr. Jim Bodoh and Dr. Corey Harris Chiropractors at River City Chiropractic

Interesting New York TImes article about Neck Pain.

Here is an interesting article in the New York Times that talks about chiropractic care for treating neck pain. This study took a group of patients and divided them into several groups randomly. One group was given chiropractic care, one light exercises, and another was given pain medication to treat their neck pain. Chiropractic care performed the best at reducing symptoms of neck pain. The other exciting part of the study was that when care was stopped, the patients were then interviewed a year later about how they felt. The results of this showed that chiropractic care did better than all the rest at keeping patients out of pain.

This is exciting new research that backs up what chiropractors have been saying for years. Chiropractic is a safe and effective way to treat neck pain. It fixes the cause of the problem and doesn’t just cover up the symptoms like pain medications do. With more and more serious side effects coming out from medications and more and more lawsuits being filed everyday from people that had negative side effects that were not known, isn’t it time to try a more conservative approach? Chiropractic care can help people get back to living a pain free life.

  6. Incidence of Whiplash in Motor Vehicle Accidents

    by
    Comment

Incidence of Whiplash in Motor Vehicle Accidents

By: Dr. Jim Bodoh and Dr. Corey Harris Chiropractors
    at River City Chiropractic

Here are some interesting facts about the incidence of whiplash in motor vehicle accidents:

    1. Eighty three percent of individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents suffer a whiplash injury.

(Nolet PS, Pierre C. Cassidy JD, Carroll LJ, (2010) The association between a lifetime history of neck injury I a motor vehicle collision and future neck pain: a population-based cohort study.  Eur Spine J 19:972-981)

    2. Greater than 50% of those injured report ongoing neck pain one year after the accident.

(Carroll LJ, et al (2008) Course and prognostic factors for neck pain in whiplash-associated disorders: results of the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders. Spine 33 (suppl):S83-S92)

    3. For those experiencing neurological signs after a car accident, 90% may be symptomatic one year later.

(Carroll LJ, et al (2008) Course and prognostic factors for neck pain in whiplash-associated disorders: results of the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders. Spine 33 (suppl):S83-S92)

Motor Vehicle Accidents can cost you your HEALTH.

Taking in to account this information, it is easy to see the benefit of getting a checkup after an accident. The longer people wait to come into our office after an accident, the worse the symptoms become. Many people try the wait-and-see method. Everyone hopes that their pain and other symptoms will just go away. The problem with this thinking is when the problems don’t just go away. What if there is something wrong? Then the time wasted waiting is detrimental to the condition at hand. Motor vehicle accidents can cause altered movement in the spine which can lead to arthritic changes. Over time, arthritis can build up
and end up limiting movement at joints. Many people experience this “stiffness with aches and pains” as they get older when the arthritic joints start giving them problems. If the problem is fixed right away before arthritic changes set in, then the joint is able to function at its ideal pain free motion for many years to come.

One of the most important goals for people in accidents is to return to a normal pain free lifestyle. Numerous people that receive chiropractic care after motor vehicle accidents report feeling better faster. The important aspect to their speedy recovery is that they came into the clinic right away to receive care. Make sure to call today to find out more on how chiropractic care can help you
or a loved one deal with the pain of a motor vehicle accident.

  8. Phrase of The Week: The First Symptom

    by
    Comment

By: Dr. Jim Bodoh, Chiropractor at River City Chiropractic

What would you say if I asked, how healthy are you?

This week the phrase of the week is “The First Symptom.”

This phrase relates to the question of how healthy are you? When you ask the average person walking down the street how healthy they are, they generally say, “I feel okay.” That is an adequate answer, but I didn’t ask how you feel today, I asked how healthy are you? People seem to relate how healthy they are to how they feel that day. No one really wants to say “I’m in terrible shape” or “I don’t take very good care of myself.” In thinking of how healthy you truly are today maybe you should ask yourself how healthy have you been in the last few months and more than just how you feel today.

Along this line of thinking is the idea of the first symptom. When you look at the most recent data from the CDC on 3 of the top 4 causes of death they are: Heart disease, Cancer, and Stroke. You can then ask yourself what is the first symptom of each of these causes of death? It is not a stretch to assume in each of these diseases that once you present with the first symptom, it is already too late. This is why heart disease, cancer, and stroke are 3 of the top 4 causes of death in America. The most deadly forms of disease are ones that are considered “silent killers.”

Now coming back to my first point, if you asked someone the day before they collapsed with a stroke, “How do you feel?” They would probably respond that they, “Feel okay.” Whereas if you asked this same person how healthy they have been over the last few years, you might have gotten a different response.

Health problems can sneak up on you, what are you doing to prevent it?

In the media you are now hearing a catchy buzz word, that people are interested in “Preventative Health Care.” This is where you are screening for problems before a person feels that they are sick because it is easier to treat them earlier in the disease. This makes problems more treatable and is a more cost effective approach to health care. This type of approach has been used for many years in the chiropractic field. We screen for problems throughout your spine to catch and correct them before the little aches and pains turn into big problems such as not being able to move or function without pain. It is much easier to keep a person well than it is to get a person well.

When a person comes into our chiropractic clinic with back pain, one of the first questions we ask is, “What do you think caused this pain?” To this many of our patients reply that, “I have had back pain all my life.”  To this I generally respond, “Well, where have you been?” It would have been a lot easier and cheaper to get this patient better if they would have come in before the problem became so bad that they could barely walk.

Just remember that many conditions start before there first symptom presents.

  9. Is the Hippocratic Oath Hypocritical?

    by
    Comment

    Let Food be Thy Medicine?

By Patti Bartsch, N.D., Ph.D., Nutritionist at River City Chiropractic

    What would Hippocrates Say?

All medical doctors take the Hippocratic Oath which includes the phrase “First, do no harm.”  If doctors are so concerned with what Hippocrates believed, why aren’t they honoring his motto of “Let food be thy medicine”?

Something like 6% of medical schools offer a nutrition class and in most of those it is an elective.  We know that “we are what we eat” and yet people continue to eat things that do not occur in nature and therefore have no nutritional purpose in the body; in fact they can be highly toxic.

I was listening to NPR the other day and there was a discussion about saying Grace (Gracias = Thanks).  I was taught to say Grace in catholic school but I was never taught to be thankful to the food.  We were taught to be thankful to God for providing the food but we never actually focused on the food.  Native Americans and other cultures that are connected to the Earth honor their food.  They honor any animal that gave its life for the food and they honor the Earth for providing the weather to grow their food.  They recognize that food is life.  Food provides the body not only with calories as fuel, but with micronutrients and phytonutrients to optimize health.

If you had an ingredient label, what would be on it? From a health perspective, I think it is important to recognize food as the ingredients that make up you.  Would you want to be made from natural ingredients like sweet potatoes, brown rice, green beans, beets, and garlic?  Or would you want to be made from sodium benzoate, FD&C Red 40, high-fructose corn syrup, and disodium EDTA?  The truth is that your body cannot build or repair itself with those ingredients.  It recognizes them as foreign and mounts and immune response against them.  I refer to these products as anti-nutrients because rather than providing nourishment, these foods make your body fight them.  And while your immune system is distracted by these anti-nutrients, it cannot keep up with normal demands so illnesses like colds, allergies, and cancer go unchecked.

    Blueberries are a Healing Food

Food has tremendous healing properties.  Garlic has been used for centuries for its anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.  It is recommended that at least one-quarter, preferably one-half, of the plants you eat are uncooked.  This is because heating foods above 118°F causes the destruction of valuable enzymes and other nutrients.  Try to eat a big salad at least once per day and try to have a rainbow of colors in that salad.  Consider using just olive oil and vinegar as dressing because many commercial salad dressings have lots of artificial ingredients.

I wrote an earlier blog about how I unintentionally cured my allergies when I transitioned to a whole-foods diet.  Why did my doctor never tell me that my diet of processed foods from cans, boxes, and plastic trays was likely contributing to my allergies?  Because she had no clue.  They don’t teach that in medical school.  They teach that a person with high cholesterol needs to be on a prescription medication to control it.  They don’t teach that a high-fiber, plant-based diet will help the body to rid itself of excess cholesterol before it is reabsorbed into the bloodstream.  Why?  Because there’s much more profit in drugs than there is in beans.  But guess what?  These drugs are toxic!  The pharmaceutical companies know they’re toxic and so do the doctors.  This is why they require regular blood tests to check to see how your liver is doing; because they know the drugs are damaging your liver.

Hey!  What happened to “First, do no harm”?  I think they should revise the Hippocratic Oath so that it focuses on “Let food be thy medicine” instead.  I’ll put my money on the healing power of foods over a handful of pills any day.

  10. Condition Of The Month: Fibromyalgia

    by
    Comment

Fibromyalgia hurts more than just you.

By: Dr. Corey Harris, Chiropractor at River City Chiropractic

Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by widespread pain in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues.  Some other problems commonly linked with fibromyalgia include fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep problems, headaches, numbness in hands and feet, depression, and anxiety.  Fibromyalgia can develop on its own, or secondary to other

musculoskeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus.  Diagnosis of fibromyalgia requires a history of at least three months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in a least 11 of 18 tender-point sites.  These tender-point sites include fibrous tissue or muscles of the Neck, Shoulders, Chest, Rib Cage, Lower Back, Thighs, Knees, Arms (elbows) and Buttocks.  The overwhelming characteristic of fibromyalgia is long-standing, body-wide pain with defined tender points.  Tender points are distinct from trigger points seen in other pain syndromes.  (Unlike tender points, trigger points can occur in isolation and represent a source of radiating pain, even in the absence of direct pressure.)

Fibromyalgia pain can mimic the pain experienced by people with various types of arthritis.  The soft-tissue pain of fibromyalgia

Chiropractic care can help relieve the symptoms of Fibromyalgia!

is described as deep-aching, radiating, gnawing, shooting or burning, and ranges from mild to severe.  Fibromyalgia sufferes tend to waken with body aches and stiffness.

Chiropractic care works on relieving pain and symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Our clinic also offers Firbro-Ease, a nutritional supplement that improves muscle relation and reduce pain along with providing the nutriets that are needed on a daily basis to help ease symtoms.
